Frequently Asked Questions

A micro-credential is a flexible and affordable option for expanding your knowledge and skills in a specific area of study. This micro-credential demonstrates medical coding competency for the course material, which helps students make early and incremental progress toward their career goals, while at the same time preparing them to pursue an academic certificate or degree.

Achieving a micro-credential is not as rigorous of a process as earning a certification, but a micro-credential may be used towards meeting certification or even recertification requirements. While certifications typically expire after a predetermined amount of time, micro-credentials do not.

Each participating institution program is accredited or in the process of being accredited (candidacy status) by various entities based on program type. You may contact the institution to confirm accreditation status or visit AHIMA’s Professional Certificate Approval Program (PCAP) directory or the CAHIIM Program Directory.

The set of 13 courses formerly known “Coding Basics” has been renamed “Medical Coding and Reimbursement Online Courses.” The product was renamed to bring it into alignment with similar products offered by AHIMA such as the new series of courses developed with the Haugen Consulting Group.
